Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. You've found notes out there that they supposedly wrote... and the places you end up aren't anything like the places we're supposed to be. If they're not their memories, then they've got to be someone's creation. We already saw that room on the ship that could replicate your thoughts in reality.
swan told me that they ARE probably memories. just didn't know whose, at the time we talked about it. the guess is that they're memories that are lost, which would explain the holes.
